WDKX Review of “The Lion King“ in Rochester

Written by on December 23, 2019

Entertainment sparks everyone’s interest depending on what and how they choose to see it, bringing different people together to create or watch something spectacular. Nowadays fresh, new stories are shown and received. Yet reboots, animated adaptations, or live-action adaptations seem to dominate. Adaptations can either capture hearts once again, or irk people knowing they are watching something they use to love again, yet it’s “newer”. The only difference is how this story is chosen to be shown in a new light. Watching The Lion King at Rochester Broadway Theater League felt as if this were my first time. Not just watching the musical, but watching the story. I knew the Disney animated classic that I watch countlessly, but not the stage production.

The flawless, agile, and colorful scenery and the sets were mesmerizing. Leaving the theater the only question circling through your head seemed to be, “How did they do that?” Following with the incredible stage direction of actors and the movement choreographed by the magnificent, groundbreaking work of Garth Fagan is shown through the amount of passion placed in every step. During the show, anywhere you sit, the scenery and music surrounds you in a wave of surreal chills. I was fortunate enough to sit one seat away from an aisle, best choice every. For certain productions, sitting on an aisle seat is equivalent to winning the lottery. You buy the ticket thinking nothing of it, sit down, and a few moments later you’re in total awe. This is one of those shows.

Overall, this inspiring story of finding your purpose and place in the world by channeling and remembering the past to better yourself is a must see. There is a reason The Lion King is the #1 production in the world, because it lives beyond the hype.
