Over the years mental health has become a prominent issue within our community, but it is a blessing to have celebrities such as Taraji P. Henson use their platform to shine light on this important issue.

Taraji P. Henson is “moving the needle on mental health in the black community”. Mental illness is not a popular topic within the black community, therefore, having celebrities like Taraji fighting to change the stigma of mental health in our community is huge.

Recently she launched a new foundation that is specifically geared towards people of the black community. Her creation of The Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation, named after her late father, will provide scholarships for students majoring in mental health as well as provide mental health services for children in urban schools.

The name and idea of this foundation stems from her father suffering from mental health issues after fighting in the Vietnam war. She discussed how her father “fought in the war for our country and returned broken with little to no physical and emotional support”. This is extremely important due to the growing number of former veterans who have put their lives on the line and returned home to little or no support from our country.

What Taraji is doing is courageous and powerful in our community. You go girl!??????
