Here are a couple of black facts to get your week started.

August 16th

A star is born! The beautiful and iconic Angela Evelyn Bassett Vance was born on August 16, 1958, in New York City, New York. She is not only an actress but she is an activist, director, and producer. She has won 16 awards including a Golden Globe Award for her most notable role as Tina Turner in What’s Love Got To Do With It. So far Angela Bassett has been nominated for a total of 63 awards in her career.

Bassett is also a United States Ambassador for UNICEF.

August 17th

Marcus Garvey was born on August 17, 1887. Garvey inspired the Nation of Islam and the Rastafarian Movement. Also, he was the orator for the Black Nationalism and Pan-Africanism movements. He founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League. His influence inspired a mass movement named after him called Garveyism.

Marcus Mosiah Garvey Jr. was born in Saint Ann’s Bay, Jamaica. Garvey taught his self how to read.
