San Francisco Could Be First Major U.S. City To Pay $5 Million For Reparations Per Person

Written by on March 15, 2023

San Francisco could be the first city in the United States to make a move that could allow the city to pay reparations in a big way. In a $5 million per person way.

The San Francisco African American Reparations Advisory Committee released a report this week. In that report they listed more than 100 recommendations for reparations to eligible Black people that included an exemption for Black owned businesses from paying taxes or a lump sum payment of $5 million.

Critics say this kind of payout does not make sense in the state and city that has no history of enslaving Black people. There is an estimated 50,000 Black people living in San Francisco currently. It’s not clear how many if any would fit the criteria for the reparations.
