Jam Squad Recap: Rochester Hosts SPIE Optifab- America’s Optical Fabrication Conference

SPIE Optifab is North America’s premier optical manufacturing conference and exhibition and draws in over 2,000 optics professionals. Some of these professionals include manufacturers, engineers, scientists, academics, students, technicians, and service providers. These technologies built through optical fabrication play a critical role across a variety of industries such as consumer, automotive, healthcare, biomedical, telecommunications, energy, and aerospace & defense.

The four-day SPIE Optifab conference will include technical presentations about the latest in the science of designing and manufacturing optical components. Just to give you an example, these presentations will cover creating and working with specialty glass, polymer, and ceramic materials, lens, window, dome, flat, prism and freeform design and manufacturing and coating optical elements for durability and wave transmission.

If you would like to attend this conference, the hours are as follows:

  • Tue. Oct 15th / Wed. Oct 16th: 10:00 am- 5:00 pm
    • A job fair will be hosted on these two days for anyone interested in working in the various fields of optical fabrication.
  • Thur. Oct 17th: 10:00 am- 3:00 pm
    • This day will be dedicated to students who will be able to learn about optical manufacturing from leading experts and will have the opportunity to speak with 180 optical fabrication companies, and see precision machines in action.
      • Students must be accompanied by adults. Students and accompanying adults receive free exhibition access any day, but only Thursday includes this special program. 
      • Students that signed up by 4 October will be treated to a free lunch, sponsored by the The Institute of Optics, Univ. of Rochester.
