Help for medical debt surging across the nation

Written by on March 4, 2020

Many people these days are confused by high dollar medical debt. Why am I saying “confused” instead of using words that people commonly hear like “angry” or “broken”?

People have been misled by the healthcare and collection industries. They’ve been taught that their medical debt, and associated damage to their credit scores, are completely normal and even natural aspects of life. They’ve been brainwashed into believing that high anxiety and stress associated with this debt, that usually undermine their health further, are norms that they should just accept.

Well, I believe that anyone having difficulty building a nest egg to start a family or go to college, investing in a home or car or, worse yet, pursuing treatments for their health conditions because of medical debt should never see this scenario as “acceptable.” It’s unacceptable for anyone in our nation to be forced to watch their health and life worsen with every collection call and mailed bill.

Thankfully, I’m not alone in this belief.

As a CNN article from March 1, “How ordinary citizens are wiping out millions of dollars in medical debt for others — and how you can, too,” points out, options exist to create a new medical debt normal that saves lives. For example, the article mentions organizations like Crossroads Church and RIP Medical Debt that have been wiping out peoples’ debts in an effort to not only improve the lives of individuals, but also to re-invest in our country’s economy, infrastructure and social balance.

Now, the next step is to hold the health and collection industries accountable for their practices so that people are never strapped with it to begin with every time they need to see a doctor.
