Can Your Lash Extensions Give You Lash Mites?

Doctors are warning people about the dangers of lash mites, and how those who get lash extensions and the elderly are at a higher risk of getting them.

Dr. David Burstein of Kenmore Eye Care has treated many patients for lash mites, and some of them have lash extensions. He says, “When you’re using things like extensions, and you create a little bit of inflammation, that knocks down the immunity and allows these mites to create an infestation.”

He does go on to reassure those who enjoy the look of lash extensions that this isn’t the primary cause of lash mites. He urges patients to thoroughly wash their eyelashes and lids.

“You want to be kind of rough on your lashes, don’t be gentle. You want to get right down to the base of those lashes,” said Burstein.

If you happen to come in contact with lash mites, they are typically treated within 2-4 weeks with the proper scrubs, cleansers and wipes, usually containing tea tree oil. Burstein recommends that you see a doctor if you ever have issues with your eyelashes, whether you have extensions or not.
