Buckle Up! New Seatbelt Law Starts Sunday

Written by on October 30, 2020

There is a lot going on this weekend. It’s the last few days of early voting. Halloween is Saturday. And New York’s new seatbelt law goes into effect on Sunday.

The current law does not require people age 16+ to wear a seatbelt while sitting in the backseat, but that changes on November 1, 2020.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, seat belts reduce the number of accident fatalities by almost 50%.

It’s kind of crazy to think that lawmakers ever excluded older teenagers from this protection, especially when teens often ride with other unexperienced drivers.

Passengers caught breaking the new law will face a $50 fine.
