This is the 2nd time in Elmont Memorial High School recent history that an African-American student has been accepted to all 8 Ivy League Universities. Last year’s salutatorian, Harold Ekeh, was accepted to all Ivy leagues, and chose to attend Yale. This year, the prestigious Long Island high school is recognizing Augusta Uwamanzu-Nna as the 2nd student to accomplish a clean Ivy League sweep.

What make this even more news worthy is both students are of Nigerian descent. Ekeh was born in Nigeria, but moved to the U.S. when he 8 years old; Uwamanzu-Nna was born in the US, but her parents are Nigerian immigrants. Uwamanzu-Nna, who is also class valedictorian, has yet to make a decision on where she will pursue her interest in biochemistry and environmental studies, but she can’t go wrong either way.
