- Simple Basic Eligibility Requirements
We all know the job of a firefighter is no walk in the park, but getting in the club may not be as difficult as you think! Here’s all you’ll need:
- City of Rochester residency by the application deadline
- High school diploma or GED
- Good physical & mental health
- Drug free
- 18 years of age or older at the time of appointment
- Valid NYS Driver’s License

The average fire uniform weighs about 45 pounds, and that’s just the basic helmet, hood, pants, coat, gloves, boots and air pack. Add on any other equipment and and you can almost double that! So needless to say, you’ll have a summer bod all year long!

- No Prior Experience Necessary, But it Helps!
As previously stated, firefighters perform a variety of technical work in emergency situations, which will all be taught to you with the best professional training. However, if you have experience in these types of emergency environments then you’ve already got a leg up! Experience that will add to your training includes:
- Military & Armed Forces Service
- Nursing & Medical Services
- EMS Provider
- College student studying EMS, Fire Science, Criminal Justice or Fitness
