Monday morning, a collision between an Amtrak train and a motor vehicle led to the unfortunate death of 20 year old, Brandon Saeur. The accident occurred at the railroad crossing on King Road in Chili.
According to reports Saeur was on his way to work around 6 a.m. when the accident happened.
Witnesses stated that Saeur was trailing a car in front of him when the gates of the crossing came down and he proceeded to go around the car in front and the gates, when the train hit his vehicle with immediacy.
Brandon Saeur was a Town of Chili employee working with the Parks Department. Both his father and brother are also employed by the Town of Chili. The Town Supervisor David Dunning stated a few things on this horrific incident. “It’s bad enough that a young person lost their life in such a horrific accident it makes it even worse when they’re one of our employees.”
There are no details on why Brandon drove his vehicle around the gates but there are many speculations on the incident. Some residents in the area state that the gates have come down numerous times without a train being around.
According to reports, even though the residents say that the gates do come down in error a little too frequently, it’s still never worth the risk to go around them when they are down.
The flags outside town hall will fly at half staff to remember Brandon Sauer.
The Amtrak train was on its way to NYC and was reported traveling well under the speed limit. There were no injuries on board.
