Celebrating MLK Day Here Is The List Of Local Events

Here is what’s happening around town for MLK Day.

Celebrating Diversity at the Strong National Museum of Play
11 a.m.– 4 p.m.
The Bright Star Theatre will perform African Folktales and Jackie Robinson. Enjoy dances performed by Grupo Cultural Latinos En Rochester. Meet members of Alfred University’s Art Force Five and help create fun crafts with the team. View mosaics of civil rights leaders and their inspiring quotes.
 
MLK Day On Event at the Harvey School and Horizons at Harley, 10:30am – 11:30am
Dining Hall at 1981 Clover Street, Rochester, NY 14618 
The Harley School will host several organizations to promote kindness and care in the community. Service projects include:

  • Making lemonade to benefit childhood cancer research for Alex’s Lemonade Stand
  • Collecting birthday cards and bags for Bay Street Food Cupboard
  • Decorating Hershey hugs and kisses bags for children at Golisano Children’s Hospital
  • Counting coins for Coin Harvest
  • Putting together foot care packages for foot clinics and Harley Hospice Program
  •  Raising money for “No One Left Behind” through arts and crafts and trivia

 
Free Dance Classes at Garth Fagan Dance 
11 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.  50 Chestnut St, 3rd Floor, Rochester, NY 
Continuing its annual tradition since 1997, Garth Fagan Dance will once again honor the memory of Martin Luther King, Jr. through the magic of dance! FREE classes will be taught by Natalie Rogers-Cropper, Bessie Award winning Principal dancer and Director of Garth Fagan Dance School, along with other senior members of Garth Fagan Dance. Pre-registration is recommended.
 
19th Ward Community Association MLK, Jr Luminary Event
Arnett Library, 12pm – 1:30pm Kickoff
Luminary Night, 719 S. Plymouth Ave; 449 Chili Ave  Sunset – 9pm
The 19th Ward neighborhood plans to “light up the neighborhood” with luminaries, lanterns and flashlights to express solidarity with the values of Martin Luther King’s Beloved Community and his campaign against racism and poverty. Keynote speaker Rochester City Court Judge, Stephen T. Miller.
NYS Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr Holiday Memorial Observance Empire State Plaza Convention Center, Albany.
Musical performance by Jennifer Holiday.  Event will be live streamed here starting at 10 a.m.
Boys & Girls Clubs of Rochester MLK Celebration Dinner 
500 Genesee St.
6 p.m. – 8 p.m.
 
Rochester Regional Health MLK Day Events
Janet Lomax will be the keynote speaker and the School of the Arts concert choir and jazz band will provide music at the following locations:
A.  RGH Twig Auditorium @ 9 a.m.
B.  Unity Hospital Education Center @ 11 a.m.
C.  St. Mary’s Campus East/West Auditorium @ 2 p.m.
