(MELANIE) – Poverty continues to be an ongoing issue in Rochester. For the last 37 years Operation Food Basket has brought awareness and advocacy to those living in poverty. This year their holiday campaign to feed people in need raised $53,000. The money was used to purchase food baskets to give out to at least 200 families this Christmas.
“We are buying groceries for over 2,000 people and it is a week`s worth of groceries so it should last them through the holidays,” said Bernie Burman of Operation Food Basket.
The House of Mercy is just one of the many stops on Operation Food Baskets route to give food to families in the Greater Rochester area. Operation Food Basket also donated dozens of food baskets to the Community Place of Rochester and Lifespan. Xerox and other community partners including WDKX all worked together to ensure that the operation was a success.
“Poverty is a problem in Rochester. It`s a serious problem in Rochester so we`re trying to help mitigate it but also showcase that it is an issue and inspire other people to do the same thing,” said Burman.
