A new kind of hospital emergency room is opening at the former Lakeside Memorial Hospital in Brockport on Tuesday.
An off-campus emergency department, the first such site in upstate New York, is opening at UR Medicine's Strong West location at 156 West Ave. As of 8 a.m. Tuesday, Strong West's urgent care operation will become Strong West Emergency.
Off-campus EDs in New York state provide acute emergency care and are open every day, around the clock. According to a statement from the University of Rochester Medical Center, an off-campus ED will have a physician on duty at all times and can accept patients transported by ambulance, which the urgent care center could not.
The Strong West ED will have three short-term observation beds but no in-patient beds, according to the statement. Those patients requiring more care will be treated and taken either to Strong Memorial or Highland hospitals, or to a hospital chosen by the patient.
Strong Memorial Hospital Chief Operating Officer Kathy Parrinello said Monday that the new ER will benefit the Brockport area, which hasn't had a full-service emergency room since Lakeside closed last year.
Parinello said it's too early to say if UR Medicine will open other off-campus ERs.
"We'll have to see how this evolves," Parrinello said. "This may be a model for others."
