Governor Signs Legislation That Would Add Surcharge To Cell Phone Customers In Monroe County
by News

Governor Cuomo signed legislation that would allow Monroe County to collect a $0.30 surcharge on wireless bills. This would fund the local 911 operation. This would only apply to contracted cell phones. Pre-paid customers are not affected. The funds would supply approximately $1.8 million to the annual operating budget of $18 million. The added funds would help to upgrade the 911 computer system, which will cost between $6 and 7 million dollars.

The last step for this bill to pass is for it to be presented to the County Legislature for a vote, which could happen as early as today. If it passes, cell phone carriers would be notified within 45 days of the added surcharge. The funds would then be available to the Monroe County 911 center sometime in November.
