University Of Rochester Exploring Possibility Of Taking Over East High School
by News

The University of Rochester is interested in potentially managing East High School.

A letter from the university asks the state education commissioner to extend the deadline to February 2015 to submit proposals for East High.

A plan for East High is due to the state by May 15. The state education department gave the district a handful of options or face shutting down the school after years of what the state called "low academic achievement."

According to the university, should the state extend the deadline, it will consider the possibility of applying as a Educational Partner Organization, or EPO, and taking over East High. The University says it didn't feel it had enough time to come up with an in-depth analysis and well thought-out plan.

During the 2014-2015 school year, the letter said the university would lead new initiatives at East High to increase learning opportunities, as well as use that time to revise items included in its EPO proposal.

At Tuesday night's special board meeting, Superintendent Bolgen Vargas also presented a "phase-in, phase-out" plan that would mean a new principal and half of East's teachers being sent to other schools. Vargas said he prefers that an EPO take over, and that this was a backup plan.
