Driver Who Tweeted '2 Drunk 2 Care' Prior To Crash Charged In Deaths Of Florida Women
by News

A Florida woman who tweeted a controversial message prior to a wrong-way car crash that killed two best friends has been charged in their deaths.

Kayla Mendoza, now 21, tweeted that she was "2 drunk 2 care" just hours before allegedly driving her vehicle the wrong way down a South Florida highway on Nov. 17, 2013. She crashed head-on into another car and killed two women, Kaitlyn Ferrante and Marisa Catronio, both 21, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Mendoza faces multiple counts of DUI manslaughter and vehicular homicide, along with other charges. She was booked into Broward Main Jail on Monday, arriving in an ambulance with a police escort, and was wheeled in on a stretcher because she is unable to walk due to injuries sustained in the crash, according to CBS Miami.

Police compiled and analyzed evidence for several months before making an arrest. The victims' families watched as Mendoza was wheeled into the jail, a sheet covering her face. CBS Miami reports:

"She changed the lives of our family forever" said Gary Catronio, Marisa's father. "You took my baby girl. You took my wife's best friend. You made bad decisions that night. The right decision was to have a friend drive you home."
Prior to the accident, Mendoza dubbing herself a "pothead princess" and bragged over social media that her car permanently smelled like marijuana. Mendoza's blood alcohol levels were shown to be twice the legal limit.

She spent several weeks in the hospital recovering from brain injuries and broken bones.

Mendoza is being held without bond. Her Twitter account has since been deactivated.
