In the Rochester School District, where problems are many and miracle solutions hard to come by, one basic idea has the potential to change the narrative: Get parents involved. When mom and dad help with homework, visit the classroom and make sure their children get to school, academic performance is nearly guaranteed to rise.
That's no secret. The question is how to accomplish it. Or more to the point, what portion of a $784 million budget should be dedicated not to students but to engaging their parents?
In last year's Rochester school district budget, the number was $3.6 million, about one half of 1 percent of total expenditures. A recent committee tasked with finding ways to better engage parents doesn't think that's enough.
It recommended the school board spend 2 percent of next year's budget on parents. That would mean quadrupling current parent engagement spending to more than $15 million.
