Kate Semmler didn't know exactly what hit her back in August, but she knew something was wrong, so she went to the hospital.
At 37, the mother of three and stepmother of two from Newark had suffered two heart attacks. She's thankful to have had Newark-Wayne Community Hospital close by.
Kate's story was highlighted by hospital officials at an announcement 55 miles away, as the crow flies. Batavia's United Memorial Medical Center is merging with Rochester General Health System.
"In my estimation, employers and patients and individuals are finding it increasingly hard to keep up with health care costs, so we have to, as an organization, improve clinical care, we have to improve the value that we bring to our patients and the citizens in our county," said UMMC CEO Mark Schoell.
UMMC will join Newark-Wayne under the Rochester General umbrella.
Medical experts say a full range of clinical services could be performed at rural hospitals 50 years ago, but no more.
The deal, which strengthens medical services for Batavia residents, could be finalized in six to eight months.
