Residents Urged to Stay Smart When Faced With Extremely Cold Temperatures
by news

Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks is reminding residents to stay smart in the extremely cold weather hitting the area over the next 24 to 48 hours.

During a press conference Monday, Brooks warned that the county is expecting wind chills Monday night to dip down to -35 below zero. Tuesday night, wind chills could reach -25 degrees.

She's asking residents to check on elderly neighbors and families with small children as those are the most vulnerable.

Senior nutrition programs are cancelled for Tuesday so seniors won't have to leave their homes.

"We're used to challenging weather in Monroe County and in this region but what we forget is that challenging can very quickly turn into dangerous," said County Executive Brooks, R-Monroe County.

Brooks suggests keeping extra warm weather gear and blankets in your car.

The county will be watching for outages and monitoring conditions around the clock.
