Early-Morning Fire On Bartlett St.
by news

There's never a good time for a fire but this kind of cold weather makes things even worse.

Seven people are out of their home Friday morning after an overnight fire damaged the inside of a four-family unit on Barlett Street in Rochester.

At least three kids are among those without a warm place to stay.

Crews say fighting a fire in freezing temperatures with sub-zero windchills is not only difficult but dangerous.

The water used to fight the fire froze inside the home making it impossible for the families to stay.

"Once we got them out of the house, there was a family with small children... we let that family stay in the fire truck for a while until we could get them back in the building to keep them warm," said Chuck Stadler, Batillion 2 Chief.

The Red Cross is assisting the families.

Firefighters say they also run into problems when people refuse to shovel around hydrants.

One other thing you can do; make sure your mailbox is free of snow. That can help first responders find you faster in an emergency.
