Esurance offers a device that hooks up to a car and gathers information on route, breaking and speed.
Parents can then access all that information via an Esurance website.
What Cuomo highlighted, however, was the device's ability to help prevent distracted driving.
When the car begins to move, the device connects to an app on the driver's smartphone.
That app then tells the phone to put a stop to texting. In return for accepting the device, Esurance says it will reduce the parents' car insurance.
