Mayor Richards: Unannounced Changes To Proposed County Budget Will Cost City Taxpayers More
by news

Rochester Mayor Tom Richards says unannounced changes being made in the county budget will end up costing city residents more.

Richards says he's sent a letter to Monroe County Executive Brooks, as well as the county legislature, saying that services proposed in next year's budget could mean a five percent tax increase for city residents. Those charges include the amount paid to house people arrested before their arraignments, along with the cost of maintaining traffic devices controlled by the county.

Monroe County spokesman Justin Feasel released a statement saying, "The implication that the County does not support City government is nonsense. This year, Monroe County will provide the City over $140 million in sales tax revenue, which subsidizes nearly 30% of the City budget. The 2014 County budget reflects the actual cost of providing these two services, which are provided exclusively to the City of Rochester. As has been publicly stated in the Budget hearings, these items will be subject to contract negotiations that will take place with the Mayor in the upcoming year."
