FCC Chairman Backtracks On Cell Phone Calls On Planes
by news

Maybe you'll have to remember the "airplane mode" setting for your smartphone, after all.

One day after saying there was no technical obstacle to using cell phones to make calls on airplanes, the head of the Federal Communications Commission is backing away from his statement. Tom Wheeler said in a statement Friday that many passengers would prefer that voice calls not be made on planes adding that he feels that way himself.

Wheeler says the FCC's job is to advise whether there's a safety issue with using phones on planes not to make policy. Wheeler says there is no technical reason to bar the use of phones in the skies. But Wheeler says in the end, it's up to the airlines to decide whether cell phone use is allowed.
