More than 91 percent of teachers were rated as highly effective or effective. That's according to a preliminary report out Tuesday from the State Education Department.
The report focuses on teachers and principals outside of New York City.
The report shows 49 percent are highly effective, 41 percent are effective, four percent are developing and one percent are ineffective.
Taking a look at principals - 26 percent are highly effective, 60 percent are effective, seven percent are developing and two percent are ineffective.
"Now we have differentiated performance across four levels - having highly effective, effective, developing and ineffective, an opportunity for teachers and principals
to get feedback from their supervisors to continuously improve; so we've got a good starting point, and yes we'll learn a lot next years when we're in the second year and we can compare performance across the two years," said Education Commissioner John King.
King also says these numbers are based on educator's observation ratings and other measures, student performance and locally determined objective measures.
The commissioner says final numbers will be released either later this fall, or early winter, which will provide more analysis and break the data down district by district.
