Rochester is the only city in a recent survey of 100 metropolitan areas to see an increase in the number of affordable homes.
But in 14 of the top 100 metropolitan regions, more than half of the for-sale homes earlier this month were out of reach for middle-class buyers, shows data from real estate tracker Trulia.
A year ago, that was true in just eight of the leading metros, the data shows.
Rochester's gain was slight, from 75 to 76 percent of homes in reach of the middle class.

"You get a lot of house for your money here," said Michael Haymes, partner at ReMax Realty Group in Pittsford and Greece, noting that the inventory of affordable homes in the $100,00 price range is plentiful in the Rochester region.
The real estate climate in Rochester has always been very stable, Haymes says. Prices do not fluctuate much in deep recessions. The area job market has been able to withstand big company layoffs with the housing market continuing to show growth, Haymes adds.
The median size of affordable middle class homes in the Rochester region is 1,413 square-feet size, according to Trulia. The median income is $50,701.
