Your personal information is out there. In fact, you'd be surprised just how much others can learn about you if they know where to look.
Private investigators know, and we had one local firm investigate our own Evan Dawson, with his consent.
In just a matter of minutes, with just Evan's name and town, the investigators were able to find out all sorts of things that you might consider private.
But they're not.
"We don't have any less guidelines now on the private side of the coin than we did on the public side of the coin. All the laws that pertain to law enforcement officials pertain to us as well," said investigator Paul Siena.
But investigators like Siena are masters of finding information.
What began with a simple Google search eventually led to Evan's wife's name, her maiden name, his books, his job here at 13WHAM, the fact that he lives in East Rochester, probably grew up in North Ridgeville, Ohio, and that he has a twin brother named Drew.
While you may think that's all private information - keep in mind it's available if you know where to look.
"People should know that the information is out there and they should be at least conscious of it so they can kind of control what's out there," said Jeff Gerber, a private investigator.
Gerber and Siena will be on hand Thursday night for our Town Hall event: Your Privacy, Your Security.
