Thousands Run In Rochester Marathon
by news

Thousands lined up downtown for the start of a long journey throughout the Rochester area.

The MVP Rochester Marathon was held Sunday morning and not without enhanced security precautions in place.

In the past 10 years, the race has come to be one of the biggest small city marathons around.

"I like the energy of everyone here doing the same thing for whatever reason," said Sara Doyle from Chicago.

It was the first marathon held in Rochester since the Boston bombings.

"We are topped out at probably the largest rochester marathon in the history. We are at over 3500," said Melinda Merante of the Arthritis Foundation.

With record breaking attendance, safety and security was a top priority.

"We've had a variety of different meetings with the city and the county, communications personell, 911 you name it. All the key parties involved. We went through strategies, procedures, how things were going to go down. So we wanted to make sure we protected the runner and people to the utmost that we could," said Merante.

Rochester Police officers were at multiple checkpoints along the course. At the start, Homeland Security Officers canvased the area with explosive detection dogs.

"I feel pretty safe here. It seems like there are people looking out for us. As runners that makes you feel good," said Ross Hamilton of Chicago.

Merante says the Boston bombings may be part of the reason for the large turnout. For Lindsay Kukla, it the incident served as her motivation.

"For people to be able to get here together today for a marathon to celebrate running and celebrate an accomplishment, that takes the focus off of people who did awful things to Boston and to the country," said Kukla.

The race is the largest fundraiser for the Arthritis Foundation.
