A man was arrested for raping a woman thirteen years ago in Rochester. The Monroe County District Attorney's Office credits the national DNA database for finding the suspect.
Mario Alvarado, 34, was charged with first degree rape and first degree sodomy for an attack on a Rochester woman in April 2000. He pleaded not guilty to the charges in court Tuesday.
An indictment alleges that Alvarado broke into the woman's home and then attacked her.
The victim was in her late 40s.
Alvarado fled the state and went into hiding late last year after the DNA match was discovered. Authorities located him in Connecticut last month.
"The victim in this matter has never forgotten about that night and was very thankful that we were able to all work together to bring this defendant to face justice 13 years later," said prosecutor Elizabeth Buckley.
Alvarado is being held in jail without bail. He'll return to court next week.
