Stabbing Victim Saved By Co-Worker

Customers shouted "handshakes for the heroes" as they entered Jack's Fish Market Saturday afternoon.

"They might say that," Leroy Pugh said, "But I don't consider myself a hero or anything like that."

Leroy is one of the two employees credited with saving the life of 20-year-old Carlos, a fellow employee at Jack's. According to the Rochester Police Department, a woman stabbed the victim in the neck with a "sharp instrument" late Tuesday morning.

"He [Carlos] just kept saying I can't believe she cut me," Pugh said the 20-year-old woman immediately fled the scene. It happened so fast, Pugh said he did not know how bad his co-worker was hurt. "Then I seen [sic] the blood coming out of his neck," Pugh said, "So I grabbed some towels and aprons and put them around his neck and put pressure on his neck."

Raymond Paige, another employee at the market, loaded the victim into his car and rushed him to the hospital. "Le did his thing, jumped right into action and I just grabbed my keys," said Paige.

Police were called to the market at 826 Joseph Ave. but by the time officers arrived, Carlos was already headed the hospital. "All I could think was 'get him to a hospital,' Paige said. "He was bleeding real bad, so by the time you call 911 and they got here, ain't no telling what could have happened."

The Rochester Police Department commended the two men for getting the victim to the hospital as quick as they did. Hailed as heroes, Pugh and Paige said they just reacted, but it was their quick thinking that helped save Carlos' life.

"I would have did that for anybody in here or anybody on the streets," Pugh said, "I just don't ever want to see someone get hurt."

The suspect, a 20-year-old woman, was apprehended and currently in custody, police said.
