It's official, the American Medical Association is recognizing obesity as a disease according to CBS News.
The decision was made Tuesday, it will allow medical interventions from doctors that could include treatment by surgery, pills, and counseling.
The decision to classify obesity as a disease is definitely going to affect the way doctor's approach the condition. It will also put tons of pressure on insurance companies and legislation to include coverage for treatments in health care plans.
I think this could be a great thing for patients who are "diagnosed" with obesity. If doctor's work together to form a network with physical trainers, dietitians, and counselors. They would be able to collectively devise a plan for the individual to lose the weight and be proactive instead of reactive with their health.
Expensive yes, but not as expensive as treatments for issues related to obesity including diabetes, high blood pressure, and some cancers.
