Rochester, N.Y. - If you live in Monroe County, get ready to shell out some more money on your cell phone payments.
On Tuesday, Monroe County voted to approve a thirty cent surcharge to help fund the 911 Emergency Communication Operation Center.
In the last ten years, the call volume at the Monroe County 911 communications center has increased by almost 14 percent. At the same time, the number of landlines has decreased, dropping the revenue from surcharges there from $2 million a year to $1.4 million. This surcharge will bring in the revenue the department says it needs.
It's estimated to bring in $150,000 more per month.
47 counties in New York state have already added this surcharge. Now, it heads to the state to be voted on later this week. If passed, the earliest that contracted wireless customers could see it on their bill would be September.
