Rochester, N.Y. - School day trips to amusement parks are no more in the Rochester City School District.
Superintendent Bolgen Vargas says the trips interfere with schooling.
"I cannot in good conscience permit these trips," Vargas said in an email to parents. "Rochester students receive the least instructional time of any children in Monroe County, but they need and deserve the most."
Vargas said this move has drawn "as much passion and anxiety" as any previous decision.
Many parents argue the trip is a reward for a year's worth of hard work.
"The students actually look forward to this, it's a time to enjoy themselves," said Meghan Brown, a Rochester parent.
Adding to the aggravation, many parents put a good deal of time into planning this year's trips to places like Darien Lake and Seabreeze.
Vargas says he announced the decision last summer, but did not do a good job of relaying news of that change to parents.
"I don't think it's fair for the kids, or the parents, who have worked all week to try to get things together," said Victor Davidson, a Rochester parent.
Vargas says educational field trips are not affected by the decision.
