Rochester, N.Y. - The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is asking for help protecting local fish populations.
Several types of fish in Irondequoit Bay are dying off because of a virus called viral hemorrhagic septicemia, or VHS.
The disease is specific to fish and is not a threat to people.
The DEC reminds people when they are fishing to avoid transporting fish from one body of water to another, and to release any bait fish in the water from which it was found.
