Police Go Door-To-Door On Jay Street After Shots Fired At Probation Officers

Tuesday night could have ended much differently for two Monroe County probation officers.

Police say the two officers were sitting in their car at Jay and Orchard Street around 8:30 p.m. when a man approached them and fired several shots.

"Someone approached the car on the side and opened fire on the car without warning," Brooks said.

Both officers escaped uninjured.

Brooks said this is certainly an eye-opener for first responders like probation officers, who work unarmed.

"I think a heightened awareness. All of our probation officers go through training, I think we may go back and revisit that training," Brooks said.

"They are not police officers, they are not armed, and it's a different circumstance. We're going to go down there, work with them, find out who did it and go get them," said Chief James Sheppard of the Rochester Police Department.

Brooks says the two officers were shaken up, but did return to work on Wednesday.
