Twenty Rochester-area women are facing prostitution charges following a detail on Lyell Avenue and other west side locations on Wednesday, Rochester police announced Friday morning.
"The arrests were scattered on the west side of the city, eight were arrested in the Lyell corridor, seven in the West Main Street corridor and five arrests in other west side streets, Lake Avenue, Driving Park and Dewey," said Rochester Police Cmdr. Tim List. "This is an ongoing effort and we have done this for years, we do John details and prostitute details."
All of the women, who are between 21 and 56 years old, were charged with prostitution, a misdemeanor, and were arraigned Thursday morning in City Court. Most of the women are city residents, officers said.
Five of the women were also wanted on previous warrants. Neighborhoods, such as the Lyell corridor, are well known for prostitution. Neighborhood groups have tried to clean up these areas, police said.
"We just want to get it out to the public that we are making these arrests to dissuade these kind of acts," said List. "I think that some neighborhoods, just because of history, have drawn that kind of activity whether it's drug activities, sometimes you know what street to go to when you want to buy weed, what street to go to for cocaine or heroin, or where you have to go to get a prostitute."
