12 Household Items to Help You Prep for Hurricane Sandy

Hurricane Sandy's on its way. As of 2 a.m. the megastorm - whipping north at 14 miles per hour just 425 miles southeast of New York City-is officially expected to be one of the nation's worst hurricanes, according to updates from the National Hurricane Center. And if you're anywhere on the eastern seaboard, you're most likely feeling the effects of it: winds up to 75 miles per hour, slashing rain, or perhaps, a sudden calm. The storm's expected to turn inland today bringing surges of water as high as 11 feet near Long Island. Flooding and strong winds could cripple transportation and leave millions without power along the east coast and even further inland. "The size of the storm is going to carve a pretty large swath of bad weather," Rick Knab, director of the National Hurricane Center said. "This is not just a coastal event."

But, you don't have to feel helpless in some of Mother Nature's most unforgiving weather. An emergency disaster supply kit put together from a few basic household items can make all the difference as you wait out the storm. Even if you don,t have time to run to the store, gather what you can around the house from this list (suggested by the Federal Emergency Management Agency) and stash them in a secure place. Chance are, you have a lot of these products lying around, and they could come in handy. Here's what you need, Water one gallon of water per person, per day for at least three days (for drinking and sanitation), Food: at least a three-day supply, per person, of non-perishable food, Battery-powered radio for weather alerts, and extra batteries, Flashlight and extra batteries, First aid kit, Whistle to signal for help, Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation, Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities, Manual can opener for food, Cell phone and cell phone chargers, Local maps, Duct tape and plastic sheeting to create some sort of shelter.
