Obesity: A $12 Billion Problem
by News

A new report by New York State Comptroller Thomas Dinapoli shows just how much obesity related health problems cost the state and federal government.

"Total obesity-related costs in New York State are estimated at more than $11.8 billion annually," said an official at the Comptroller's office.

Childhood obesity accounts for roughly three percent of the overall costs.

"It's the obese kids that become obese adults," said Pediatrician Ed Lewis.

"More importantly, it's the obese adults who have obese kids and don't really see it as a problem."

Obesity among children can lead to type-two diabetes, asthma and stress in joints. In adults, it can lead to heart disease.

About four billion dollars in expenditures are funded by Medicaid according to the report, half of that coming from New York State taxpayers. Most of the rest is paid by Medicare, workers' and employers' health-insurance premiums according to the report.
