RTS Transit Center receives final OKs
Final approvals were granted Thursday for a $50 million transit center on Mortimer Street. Excavation work is to begin Monday.
The Rochester-Genesee Regional Transportation Authority's board of commissioners signed off on funding and construction contracts for a one-story building that will stretch from South Clinton Avenue to St. Paul Street.
The new facility will allow outdoor stops along Main Street, St. Paul Street and Clinton Avenue to be consolidated at one indoor location.
Preliminary site preparation is under way, officials said. The official groundbreaking is scheduled for November. The multiyear project is expected to create as many as 50 jobs, and more than 400 construction jobs, officials said.
The Federal Transit Administration is providing $40 million for the project, with the state Department of Transportation and the RGRTA each contributing $5 million, officials said.
