Adult students from the OACES Family Literacy Program at The Children's School of Rochester (School No. 15) will host a dinner to benefit survivors of the tsunami in Japan
When: Thursday, April 28th
Time: 6:00 - 7:30 p.m.
Where: 30 Hart Street.
They will be cooking unique meals from their home countries, including Burma, Nepal, Bhutan, Afghanistan and Burundi.
The event is open to the public. A suggested $6 per person donation and proceeds from a silent auction will support Japanese relief efforts.
"Many of the students come from refugee camps in different parts of Asia and have felt great empathy for the people of Japan after the tsunami," said teacher Maggie Harnett of the OACES Family Literacy Program. "They have been following the relief efforts in the newspaper and worked together to find away they could help."
The Toyota Family Literacy Program at School No. 15 provides English as a Second Language instruction to 12 adult students who are new to the United States. They attend school each day to learn English and also spend shared learning time with their children, who are students at the school. The program is part of the Rochester City School District's OACES Family Learning Program, which is located at 30 Hart Street.
"Throughout the day the parents work hard to adjust to America, learn English and demonstrate to their children the importance of education," Ms. Harnett said.
Anyone unable to attend but wanting to support the event can send a donation to:
