MTV intends to air DJ AM's drug-intervention reality series, which was shot just before he died.
The status of "Gone Too Far" has been in question since DJ AM, whose real name is Adam Goldstein, was found dead last month in his New York apartment. Although a toxicology report has not been released, preliminary findings suggest the 36-year-old musician died from a drug overdose.
MTV, which declined to comment, has not made a final decision on whether to air the series, but sources say the network expects to air the program and has been in talks with Goldstein's family about the timing.
Since "Gone" is an "Intervention"-style series, with Goldstein the sober and experienced tough-love guide for troubled addicts, there was concern the show would seem hypocritical or exploitative. Sister network VH1 recently decided against airing two reality series that became embroiled in a real-life controversy because they featured murder suspect Ryan Jenkins.
If handled properly, some believe "Gone" could successfully impart its anti-drug message, perhaps now even more so. Before he died, Goldstein reportedly told his addiction-program sponsor that he would return to rehab.
The MTV situation has more in common with A&E's Jackson family reality show than with VH1's reality troubles. After the King of Pop died in June, A&E worked with the Jacksons and held off confirming the series while waiting for a toxicology report and for media headlines to subside.
Eight episodes of "Gone" were shot; three days before his body was discovered August 28, DJ AM tweeted that he wrapped filming. The show's original premiere date was October 5. Launching the series that soon seems unlikely at this point.
