The Apollo Theater will honor Michael Jackson at next year's Gala benefit by posthumously inducting him into the Apollo Legends Hall of Fame, the non-profit Theater's highest honor.
With this distinction comes a spot on the Apollo's Walk of Fame, and a plaque memorializing Jackson will join those of previous inductees James Brown, Ella Fitzgerald, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Patti LaBelle, Little Richard, and Smokey Robinson.
The Walk of Fame is scheduled to be constructed this fall, with Michael Jackson's plaque to be installed next spring.
Joining the Apollo Archive Project will be the Michael Jackson Tribute Wall - a 100-foot long blue plywood wall adjacent to the theatre that has served as an ongoing memorial for Jackson fans since news of his death on June 25.
The wall was donated to the Apollo Theater by the owners of the property adjacent to the Apollo, so that fans would be able to leave remembrances for the late King of Pop. Apollo Theater officials consider the Tribute wall an important part of Apollo history.
The Apollo is working with several Harlem community institutions including Community Board 10, the 28th Precinct, the local police department, and 125th Street Business Improvement District to execute both tribute plans, ensuring that the community is involved throughout the entire process.
