The Dean's List - Jamie Foxx: A Review
Comedian, actor & musician Jamie Foxx brought his "Intuition Tour" to Rochester last night and he showed up in a BIG way.
I knew when I walked into the Blue Cross Arena that this show would be different from shows I'm used to seeing in Rochester. Warm up comedian Speedy was already on the stage with his hilarious, yet raunchy brand of humor. There were three large video screens hanging from the rafters and a beautiful white baby grand piano on the stage. The stage set was beautiful. Risers, lights, fog machines - a full stage set up.
After a lengthy video introduction, chronicling his extensive career, Jamie Foxx hit the stage, dressed in all black. Backed by a full band and dancers, Jamie took us on a trip through his music arsenal. While singing his current hit, "I Don't Need It", Jamie broke into his version of "Sweet Dreams" by the Eurhythmics.
Throughout the show, Jamie paid tribute to the many that came before him. His versions of Luther Vandross, Prince and of course, Ray Charles songs got the crowd rocking! He also took time to salute President Barack Obama - asking the ladies, "Will you be my Michelle?" The most memorable tribute was to Michael Jackson. During a brief stage break, the DJ played all of our favorite MJ tunes. Dressed in all white, Jamie emerged from the wings and proceeded to do his best MJ dance impressions.
Jamie spent the majority of the show courting the women of the audience. While performing "She Got Her Own", Jamie told the ladies, "I want a woman who can cook, make love to me, and check her email all at the same time". And probably the most memorable moment of the show was when he invited ladies up on the stage to compete in a "Slow" dance competition - the winner would get $500! It was one of those moments that you would have to be there to appreciate. I laughed until I cried! The winner - a ROBUST woman that had a picture of Jamie airbrushed on her skirt.
At one point in the show, Jamie took us back to all of the old school dances we used to do - the running man, the smurf, the cabbage patch, etc... He hit them all. But, at 41, Jamie showed all of that he has lost a step or two (or maybe he never had it to begin with). After watching his dance moves, I am very glad he can act and sing! And singing is what Jamie does very well. He didn't miss a note all night and even apologized for buying into the whole auto-tune craze.
We all know that Jamie is an accomplished pianist, but towards the end of the show, Jamie picked up a guitar and played an impressive set, even breaking into "Fame" by David Bowie.
The Dean's List was very impressed with this show. It reminded me of some of the Las Vegas shows I've seen. Jamie was on stage for a little over two hours and all 5000 + in attendance seemed to enjoy the show.
