It was Labor Day weekend 1997 and things were heating up with my new beau and me. We were trying to come up with something to do for the long weekend. Former WDKX air-personality, Renie Hale was living and working in Washington, D.C. at the time. He called me and said that he was headed out of town for the weekend and wanted to know if I would like to have his tickets to see Maxwell in concert. I really liked the music of this new artist named Maxwell and I love DC, so I accepted his offer, gassed up the car, picked up my boo and headed to the District.
My date had never been to DC before, so I took him to all of the tourist attractions - the Smithsonian, the White House, the Mall, etc... After a long day of sightseeing, we decided to stop for some crabs on the Waterfront on our way back to my cousin's house where we were staying. On the walk back, the remnants of hurricane Erika hit. Blinding rain and pounding wind beat us up pretty good, but remembering the important things, I held on to the paper bag holding the crabs for dear life. I didn't lose one!
Once back at the house, we took off our wet clothes, ate, got into a huge argument (about what, I can't remember) and then took a nap so we could be rested for the show that night.
A quick (and very quiet) cab ride to the historic Constitution Hall and we were ready to hear Maxwell. I had no idea what a treat was ahead. The lights faded and the show began...
Maxwell and his band hit the stage dressed in all white with black lights illuminating the stage and white sheer curtains as the backdrop. That was it. No props - No special effect's - Just Maxwell!
Never before then and not since have I ever experienced such a wonderful performance by an artist! His voice was so pure, and his stage presence was AWESOME! He hit every note perfectly and his body moved in perfect sync with the music. It was one of those performances that took your breath away - Just Maxwell, his microphone, his band and me. That's how I felt. I was so taken away by him that evening that I forgot there were thousands of others in Constitution Hall with me.
Maxwell salvaged what was turning out to be the weekend from Hell. I still had to endure the 6-hour ride back to Rochester with my date in tow, but I listened to Maxwell's "Urban Hang Suite" all the way there.
I am a major music lover and have been to hundreds of concerts all over the country. I do have my favorite artists - Maxwell hadn't made that list yet. But, to this day, I will tell anyone that my top three concerts of all time are (still haven't decided on the order yet):
** Prince - Musicology Tour
** Janet Jackson - Velvet Rope Tour
** Maxwell - Constitution Hall
Maxwell will be in Buffalo this Sunday. This is a show you don't want to miss. Keep listening to WDKX for your chance to win tickets.
Maxwell has made The Dean's List.
