Kanye West returned to his hometown of Chicago Thursday to give a private concert for about 3,000 Chicago Public Schools students who have improved their grades and attendance.
The event was organized by the The Kanye West Foundation, which was founded by the performer's mother. Donda West died in November 2007.
During a news conference before the concert, Kanye said he sees his mother's "dream coming true," reports the Associated Press.
Foundation CEO Joseph Collins says the Chicago schools were "all the buzz" when he visited the day before. And he says the concert will help reduce the city's nearly 50% dropout rate.
The show for students from six area schools was one of two performances Thursday. The second, a Stay in School concert, was to benefit the Kanye West Foundation.
