The Dean's List - It's Getting Hot In Here
It's been awhile since the Dean's List has talked about the state of Rochester. To be real honest with you, I grew increasingly tired of talking about what ails our city and the possible solutions. With nothing being done to improve anything, I unfortunately got a "forget it" attitude. But, with a series of events that have happened over the last couple of week, I felt inclined to try one more time.
It's been a rough few weeks in Rochester as it relates to crime. Numerous crimes have happened with the most notable being the shooting of RPD officer Anthony DiPonzio. As a mother, I can't imagine getting that phone call saying that my child had been critically wounded. Officer DiPonzio was protecting and serving our city and was gunned down by a would-be killer. The good news is that Officer DiPonzio is making amazing progress in his recovery, which proves that prayer works. The entire Rochester community has been praying for him and will continue to do so.
I was driving home from work on Tuesday of last week, traveling down Genesee Street. As I approached Wilson High School, a swarm (at least 100) of young men poured into the street and began to fight. All of the cars in both directions were forced to a stand still since the fights were literally in the middle of the street. I picked up my cell phone to call the police and noticed others in their cars doing the same. As one police car arrived, the crowd began to disperse. I couldn't help but think again about officer DiPonzio as I watched this young officer, all by himself, get out of his car with his Billy club in his hand. I feared for his life.
Rochester is coming off of a cold snap. We have had bone chilling temperatures lately, which usually keeps people indoors. Historically speaking, crime rates go up in Rochester once the weather begins to warm up. "What are we in store for this summer?!?!?" If things are already crazy, I really hate to see what it going to be like.
OK - Here I go again:
Rochester - What are WE going to do? Let's be proactive with this. Something needs to be done now! I've offered suggestions on how to do this in the past, so I won't do it now (check the achieves of WDKX - The Dean's List to read more). I'm going to try a little something different this time:
Toughening Up On Rochester Crime - Things I Don't Want To See
**People or organization's that think they can do it all by themselves - It takes a village.
**People sitting in offices or conference rooms talking about what they are going to do, but have been sitting there having the same conversations for months, or even years and haven't done anything yet.
**Talking to the media or holding press conferences talking about what needs to be done. In the infamous words of Nike - "Just Do It".
**Don't form opinions about why our youth are doing the things they are doing until you talk to them, feel the pulse of their situation, know what their family atmosphere is like - Don't judge until you have walked a mile in someone's shoes.
**If it isn't truly in your heart to help make Rochester a better place, and you have personal motives to gain notoriety, sit your ass down and shut the hell up!
OK - I think I've said enough for now. I challenge all of you to take one step to make Rochester a better place to live. Let's take an idea out of the WDKX Radio notebook. On a weekly basis, WDKX Air Personalities go into schools and talk to children about the importance of education, abstaining from sex and drugs, career training and options, and have 1 on 1 dialogue with the students and forming relationships.
What can you do to help? You don't have time to waste, so start yesterday!
