From the ROC to BARACK -- Liz's Travel (b)Log, Day 4
by Liz

January 18, Day 4

The Gala last night was cool. Not crazy, but cool. We missed Kindred because we got there too late, but it was ok. There was a cardboard cut-out of Barack Obama people could take pictures with though. That was funny. Apparently Obama himself had prior committments, so he sent his body double! LOL!

The real fun was BEFORE we got there. We went to this new spot called "Next Door." It's right next to the famous Ben's Chili Bowl. The food was spectacular and company was great. We got there at 8 and stayed until almost 1 a.m. before going to the Gala.

We went to church this morning which was nice and the pastor preached about how this was an exciting time, a time of change, and how we need to let the word of God register and then WORK in our lives right now. I thought about the new lives coming into the world now... at this moment.

My boyfriend's good friend and his wife just had a baby girl. And today, at church, I was introduced to my boyfriend's sister's friend and her baby. I was just thinking how adorable they both were and then it dawned on me: in their lifetime, the possiblity of there being a black president won't be a possibility, it will be a REALITY! There is now a whole new generation of babies whose first cogntiive recollection of any president will be President Barack Obama... just like mine is Reagan since I was born in 1980.

That alone will shape the perception they have not only for the Office, but for the position and for THEIR POTENTIAL. That alone should also change the way that generation interacts with one another. Yes, things have gotten better since slavery and the days of the Civil Rights Movement, but the struggle continues daily. But through his presidency and through the people of today's actions in ELECTING HIM, we are framing the future in a beautiful, brighter light.

On Monday, we observe Dr. Martin Luther King's birthday. Whether a beautiful coincidence or a divine sign of promise and change, we will usher in a new era in American history. I hestitate even calling it an "era" because by definition an "era" has an end... a specific timeframe. I am happily hopeful that this is more of a shift... an evolution as natural as growth itself. And I have to say it gives me comfort to know that one day, when I have children of my own, they will be born to the same generation I admire so much: the Babies A.B. (After Barack). Imagine what THEY will accomplish NOW :) WOW!!!

Miss you guys,
Liz
