A former transit police officer captured on video shooting an unarmed man in the back has pleaded not guilty to murder.
The attorney for Johannes Mehserle, 27, entered the plea Thursday on his client's behalf in an Alameda County courtroom, where Mehserle was kept behind a glass partition out of view to most people during the 10-minute hearing.
Sheriff's deputies escorted Mehserle's relatives into the courtroom, which was filled with family members and supporters of the victim, 22-year-old Oscar J. Grant III. The Mehserle family has reported receiving several death threats since the shooting.
Mehserle was arrested Tuesday night in Zephyr Cove, Nev., nearly a week after resigning from the Bay Area Rapid Transit District police force in the wake of the New Year's Day shooting death. He faces up to life in prison in a racially tinged case that has sparked violent street protests in Oakland.
"At this point, what I feel the evidence indicates is an unlawful killing done by an intentional act," Alameda County Dist. Atty. Tom Orloff said Wednesday, according to the Associated Press.
