Ohio Players Member Dies

Robert Ward, who played with some of Motown's biggest artsts, passed away this past Christmas.

According to his wife Roberta, the musician died at his home in Dry Branch in central Gorgia after suffering a stroke in 2001 and never fully recovering.

Billboard reports that Ward, a Georgia native, moved to Ohio and founded the Ohio Untouchables, which later became the Ohio Players. However, Ward left the group well before its biggest successes in the mid-1970s, when it scored #1 hits with "Fire" and "Love Rollercoaster."

He later moved to Detroit in the 70's and performed with the Temptations, Wilson Pickett and other Motown artists. He also recorded several albums of his own, including 1991's Fear No Evil and his last album, New Role Soul, released in 2000.
