Dane Miller from Rush Henrietta High School, officially signed a division one full scholarship to Rutgers University, on the first official signing day. - Pictures and video of Dane are below
Dane Miller is an example of why I started Upstate Elite www.upstateelite.com I really believe Rochester has plenty of talent to compete with big cities, and I think we are proving it. As most of you know our 16u Team won a major tournament in NYC and we defeated the Memphis Stallions at Nationals in Cincinnati and they are ranked #1 in the country.
Other AAU programs were not developing players into "Real" college players, they were and still are just using the kids to promote their own program and run their own tournaments to make money.
John Wallace went to Syracuse back in 1992-1993 after that, the next Division 1 basketball player to sign to a major school (not mid major small div 1) was Keion Mitchem to TCU in 2006, who is currently a junior, and played in over 29 games last year. OVER 10 years between major div 1 signings in Rochester ... that's crazy.
We did not want to see the same thing happen to Dane, I started working with Dane during his sophomore year, he would come early and stay late at practices. We would even do individual workouts where we spent a lot of time fixing his shot to make it more consistent and his footwork. We worked a lot on how to properly square up to the hoop while giving you 3-5 options to either score, drive, or dish. Over the past summer we continued to master that, and added ball fakes, rip moves, and other moves....
Dane has put in a lot of time, he is a special kid, and I know there are more like him in Rochester. Our next job is to teach Dane what it takes to be a top player in the Big East, after we do that, our next job is to get him playing professional basketball. One step at a time. However, is perseverance to do the right thing, and continue to get better one day at a time, has resulted in a dream for him.
I know there are people out there that want to hate on Dane, or John, or myself, or even Upstate Elite. We never get into that, and we never talk bad about others. We just know what we are trying to do with student athletes and Dane Miller is the first one to prove my theory that having former college and professional basketball players on staff will take us/them to that next level. That having coaches that have the knowledge and experience at higher levels, and knowing what it takes to get you there, and being able to pass it on, is one of the many things that make Upstate Elite different.
Congrats to Dane Miller, he will now be playing in the best conference in the country, the BIG EAST.
